"With a view to the perfecting of the saints unto the work of ministering, unto the building up of the body of Christ." The Kara/mo/ios Twv ay. is the ultimate purpose, with a view to which the teachers, etc., have been given tis ipyov Scok. tis oU. K.t.. The Authorised Version follows Chrysostom in treating the three clauses as co-ordinate, fcaoros Oucoso/mi, ocao-ros Karaprtct, Jkootos SidKovti. The change in the prepositions is not decisive against this, for St. Paul is rather fond of such variety. But if the three members were parallel, Ipyov Sulkovuk should certainly come first as the more indefinite and the mediate object. In fact, Grotius and others suppose the thoughts transposed. A plausible view is that adopted by De Wette and many others, that the two latter members depend on the first. "With a view to the perfecting of the saints, so that they may be able to work in every way to the building up," etc. But in a connexion like this, where offices in the Church are in question, SiaKovCa can only mean official service; and this does not belong to the saints in general. Olshausen supposes the two latter members to be a subdivision of the first, thus: "for the perfecting of the saints, namely, on the one hand, of those who are endowed with gifts of teaching for the fulfilment of their office; and, on the other hand, as regards the hearers, for the building up of the Church."
