Again, the Parsons, Curtis, and Laval steam turbines have each contributed their share to the production of mechanical energy. Also explosion engines, using either oil vapour, gas, petroleum, or alcohol, have made possible the transformation of heat into mechanical work, with an efficiency which, until recently, was quite um looked for. But all these engines consume great quantities of coal, that black bread of industry, whose price, increasing with its use, causes the loss of all the fruits of economies attained by successive improvements in the efficiency of heat engines.
