After long-continued and careful labour, in which no pains have been spared, this volume is sub mitted to the public. The author has endeavoured to describe, in as full detail as his prescribed limits of space would permit, the picturesque incidents Of the early history Of Canada; the stirring episodes of its military conflicts; and the important events leading to and following the confed eration of the British North American Provinces. The growth of the principles of civil liberty and the develop ment of the Canadian Constitution will, it is hoped, be found impartially traced in these pages.
