A short account of Werner's theory is given, since the classical theory Of Valency, which is of fundamental importance in the somewhat monotonous uniformity Of the chemistry of carbon, proves inadequate when any but the very simplest compounds of the remaining elements are under consideration. The last chapter is intended to be no more than an outline' greater detail in this field would have been inconsistent with the scope of the book, and even undesirable in the present somewhat mobile state of the frontiers of this new knowledge.
