EXCERPT: PREFACE Analytic Geometry with Vectors, Second Edition, designed for students with a reasonably sound background in algebra and trigonometry, contains more than enough material for a three-semester-hour or five-quarter-hour course in analytic geometry. As in the first edition, my aim has been to write a text that students will find interesting, clear, and readable. To this end there are more applications and many new figures, especially figures accompanying examples. Vectors are introduced early (Chapter 2) and are used throughout. Nevertheless this is not a vector approach to analytic geometry. Vectors are used only where a vector treatment is clearly superior to a nonvector approach. In order to show where vectors can be useful, a section on their application has been added. The chapter on conic sections has undergone considerable change. The first edition tended to overemphasize translations; this has been corrected. In order to point out the practical side of conics, a section on the reflection properties of conics has been added. The section relating conic sections to cones has been retained. Although it may be considered to be optional, I feel that it fills a gap left by most analytic geometry texts. Rather than merely telling the student that parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas are the intersection of a plane and a right circular cone, this section actually establishes the relationship, giving the geometric significance of the foci, directrices, and eccentricity. Finally, since students often encounter curve fitting in other courses, the section on curve fitting is an interesting application that illustrates the relevance of analytic geometry...
