Kevin Yank has produced a very nice, easy to follow book on building PHP websites using MySQL database technology. Today, there are literally millions of websites that run on PHP/MySql and it is imperative that web developers learn at least PHP/MySql basics. But this book gives quite a bit more than just the basics.
A few things impres... sed me about the book. As far as I could tell, there were very few if any typos in the text or the coding. This is the 3rd edition, so they seem to have done a good job in cleaning it up, if it was needed, as I did not see the previous versions. Another thing I liked was that the book is geared for developers with virtually no knowledge of these technologies, so it is very easy to follow. ASP developers will find it quite easy to follow Yank's progress through the book.
A word of warning though: If you are a beginning web developer and have little knowledge of HTML and no experience with Dynamic web sites, then this book is not for you. You must have at least 2 years experience developing some kind of web applications before delving into this.
One thing I didn't like about the book: There is nothing in this book about PHP Form Mail. I'm sure there are plenty of resources on the net to find code for that, but it seems strange to write a book that teaches people to build a database driven site with content management pages and a shopping cart but no email form submission. This seems to be a major oversight, or else the author assumed that such would be easy to research online and implement and didn't want to waste space.
But overall a very good book, well written, easy to understand (for an intermediate web developer), and a nice reference for beginner-to-indermediate PHP code.
