Mark Noll seldom disappoints, and this investigation of the various religious convictions on the movement toward independence is no exception. He points out that Christians responded to the revolutionary impulse in four distinct ways: they first declared their allegiance to the crown and their desire for peace with England, yet they were ultimately willing to sacrifice to obtain complete religious and political freedom; they sought a fair and equitable form of government, yet certain factions sought to keep the church out of the war effort. To develop these four views of the Christian church on independence, chapters focus on the Patriotic Response, the Reforming Response, the Loyalist Response, and the Pacifist Response. If you seek an accurate depiction of Christianity in America at the time of its founding, this is probably the best on the subject in recent years.
