For many years, vector control has been carried out by centrally organized insecticidal spray teams. The effectiveness of such methods has been considerably reduced due to a number of recently encountered serious problems, such as the evolved physiological resistance of vector populations to insecticides, the inadvertent damage to natural enemies of vectors and the sheer organizational problems and cost of deploying trained spray teams. This work reviews methods of control which can overcome some of these difficulties. Combining illustrations with an informative text it explores opportunities for the implementation of small-scale technology which communities, especially in tropical developing countries can manage independently, with minimal input from outside. Most of the examples are taken from mosquito control, with a few from the control of tsetse, ticks, etc., and each chapter is introduced by a brief statement about the importance of the diseases which the vectors transmit.
