I used this book as a starter, for I didn't know CSS before reading it. I followed it writing the code in Dreamweaver, but you could do it with any simple text editor.
Eric Meyer is really the CSS master. This book is very well done with exercices to follow step by step. So, if you want to follow examples, a little bit like a personnal teacher, then this book is for you.
The only drawback to this book, which prevented me from rating it a 5 stars, is that it is really not good for a reference book once you have finished reading it (or if you want to just have a book on your shelf for when you have a specific question).
For that, I would recommand The CSS Anthology by Rachel Andrew.
