The Kentucky 3rd Battalion Mounted Rifles [also called the 1st or 10th Battalion] was organized during the late summer of 1862 and officially accepted into Confederate service on November 7, 1862. Apparently some of the men of Company E were from Virginia, and it is likely that others of this battalion were also from the western portion of Virginia which became West Virginia. Col. The unit served in the Department of East Tennessee, and later in the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. It skirmished in various conflicts in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, then surrendered at Bowling Green, Kentucky, in April, 1865. Companies Company A - Harrison County and Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County. Company B - Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County. Company C - Big Eagle, Scott County. Company D - Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County. Company E - Owen County.
