Excerpt from History of Kossuth County, Iowa, Vol. 1: A Record of All Important Events in Any Manner Relating to Its Existence, Organization, Progress and Achievement From the Earliest Times to the Mid-Summer of 1912 It appears to have been found necessary, in the Opinion of many historians, to prefix to their productions introductory chapters designed to inform the read ers on subjects which, though indirectly pertaining to the work as a whole, could not be with propriety included in the historically-treated subjects of subsequent chapters. A casual glance at these side-light opening chapters discloses the fact that they are as varied in style, scope and merit as were their authors them selves in capacity, judgment and sentiment. Macaulay began his History of England in the form of a prospectus, telling what kind of a history he intended to write and giving a summary of the work that would appear when completed.
