He seems to have been drifting into obscurity, however, and this set from Naxos represents an effort to arrest the process. The recordings are not new. They were made between 1960 (a mono recording of the Symphony No. 2 by the Belgian National Radio Symphony Orchestra) and 1996, and Naxos has done a reasonable remastering job considering the wide range of source material; several were world recorded premieres at the time. A group with conductor Frédéric Devreese leading the Moscow Symphony in the mid-1990s caught that ensemble in fine form: listen to the delicious string work in the Andante funerale in the Symphony No. 3.
