Seller's Description:
Good. First edition in English, translated from the Latin by Thomas Stack. With the ownership signature of John Taylor Coleridge (Samuel's nephew), June 1828, Torrington Square. Good copy in original dark brown calf, no spine label, some neat reinforcement to outer joints and inner hinges, the front inner hinge strengthened with old laid paper, small hole in flyleaf above Coleridge's name. Repaired lengthwise crack to middle of spine, text VG and bright. Housed in modern brown full calf clamshell box, gilt titled on spine. 49, xxii (2) 120 pp. Samuel Coleridge mentions this book, not by name, in his Table Talk, an entry of April 25, 1830: "Mead is right in denying the demoniac possessions of the New Testament but wrong in saying they were only bodily diseases. The Spirit becomes devilish in madness--but the belief that little devils got inside a man's head is absurd." (Collected Works, Vol. 14, p. 108; Princeton edition). This comment is based on Coleridge's reading of 'On Demoniacs, ' which appears on p. 73 of this volume, and must have been of particular interest to Coleridge in that it dealt with psychology and madness. But since this is his nephew's copy, possibly uncle and nephew had a common interest!
