Excerpt from Memorial Address on the Life and Character of the Hon. Jacob Collamer: Read Before the Vermont Historical Society, October 29th, 1868 Williams' Abridgment, being a digested summary of the cases reported during the golden age of English J udicial law, in the reign of George III. Down to 1798, constituting his entire body of reports. What these books contained he knew, not as mere matter of recollection - their substance became incorporated as matter of consciousness into the very substance of his mind, which thus became thoroughly indoc trinated and imbued with the foundation principles upon which the superstructure of his professional greatness arose. He was a living and instructive illustration of the difference between reading law and studying the law. His library grew apace as means increased and felt needs re quired, but was never large - hardly up to what very ordinary beginners and very moderate proficients in the profession would, in present times, deem necessary, at any rate for ap pearance' sake, if not for use. It is nearly all before me now, as I am writing in my own private oflice, and constitutes only about one-fourth of the library by which I am sur rounded, and which in all is not large.
