The enigf matical sentence has always been one of the most puzzling of the many difficult scriptural passages which have excited the inter est and battled the ingenuity of scholars. Indeed up to the present decade really no satisfactory explanation of the problem has been attempted. The older commentators evidently regarded the three words Mane, Tekel and Peres of verses 26, 27 and 28 as substantives. Josephus for example translates them (ant. X. 11. By jlrnfifinfl.
