This is the glory and excellence of our religion. To forget it would be like being blind to its brightest splendor, its most quickening power. It is not merely an abstract spiritual essence which the human soul craves for its God. It demands something more. All religions have supplied something more. They have had their accepted manifestations of God, by oracles, signs, and shining presence. The heart still asks with the disciple Philip, " Show us the Father." The peculiar glory and power of our religion is found in the reply of Jesus, "He that hath seen me, hath seen the Father," the Father dwelling in me, manifesting himself through me, showing forth his benignity in my works of love, his tenderness and pity in my compassion for human ignorance and suflering, his wish to reclaim and forgive in my labors to seek and to save the lost, --thus bringing himself into close and quickening communion with his children by adopting, as the method of his manifestation to them, a loving, devoted, and blessing life. Thus, as there was a manifestation of God to the Jew, within the veil of the Temple, so with how much more brightness, benignity, and power is there a manifestation of the Father to us within the veil of Christ's flesh! By a new way, it is called in this text; and well is it called "new," because it is so different from all the methods of manifestation which were used in the elder dispensation.
