Philips' music is intensely and densely contrapuntal, but its outstanding characteristic is its outrageous level of ornamentation; hardly a beat goes by that isn't decorated with some variety of Baroque ornament or run. On the micro-level, it's intriguingly complex, but taken in large doses, its effect is so relentlessly and frenetically animated that it can become wearying.
