Seller's Description:
Good Condition. Ex-library copy, bar code sticker, remains of removed borrowing slip. Bright, clean unmarked contents, covers protected by a clear removeable wrapper. This is a very instructive and beautifully illustrated book. Its title is misleading though, too limited. The author certainly writes about the role and financial power of medieval merchants, esp. those who developed trading routes across Europe and further away. However, many other aspects of medieval trade are developed: ---The consumers (and the changes in the demand when more cash became available in the late Middle Ages)---The main commercial goods that deserved the risks and costs of international transport (e. g woollen cloth, linen, silks, salt, white soap, wine, beer, herrings, spices, alum to fix dyestuffs, tapestries, manuscripts, paper, honey and wax, sugar, metals, furs, etc. Even slaves). Several technical innovations related to the production of these manufactured goods are mentioned. ---"Helps and hindrances to trade": the state of the roads, the means of transport, customs, presence or absence of bridges, natural obstacles such as the weather in mountain passes. The author shows how merchants/trade improved the situation (bridges and roads being built, etc). The means of transport and main routes to fairs and trade centres are also presented. ---Imbalances in trade between regions of Europe and between Europe and other important trading areas (The Levant, Russia and the Black Sea, or North Africa for instance) are at the centre of the last chapters.
