Held in conjunction with the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Visualization 98 Conference on October 19-20, 1998, the IEEE Visualization Symposium reflects the field's interdisciplinary nature and diversity of applications in research, military, and industrial areas. Microsoft Research's George Roberston, co-coiner of the phrase "information visualization," discussed "Leveraging Human Capabilities in Information Visualization" in his keynote address. Some sessions describe general methods (large information spaces, frameworks, and systems); others illustrate techniques to visualize specific information spaces as: hierarchies and networks, text and documents, command and control centers. Yale University's Edward Tufrte (Visual Explanations) gave the capstone address on graphical excellence in the presentation of information. A section of color plates enhances the 18 papers. Author index only. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
