I liked the author's clear explanations of aspects of Rails that can be confusing or mysterious for 'newbies'. Also his choice for a demo project - a Craig's List type of application - had an appeal for me.
One caveat is the book was written before Rails' current version so much of the code will not run without alteration. which can be a good learning exercise too - but it's not for everyone. : )
