In order to be convinced of the inexhaustible bounty of nature in the dispensation of her gifts, it would be sufficient to reflect upon the prodigious number of human beings who are daily and hourly receiving from this beneficent mother all the covering, food, and pleasures which they enjoy; but perhaps this is one of those circumstances which, from their frequent recurrence, are least likely to make a proper impression upon us: we will direct our reflections to those creatures which are partly made for our use, and a few of which we consider as objects of contempt. This meditation will teach us that every creature inhabiting our globe testifies the goodness of its author, and will induce us to glorify his holy name, if our hearts are capable of any reflection or feeling. An innumerable host of living creatures, inhabitants of the earth, sea, and sky, are daily indebted to nature for their subsistence; even the animals which we take upon ourselves to feed still receive it from her; the plants, which grow without our sowing them, constitute their principal food. The whole race of fishes subsists totally without the assistance of man, unless, indeed, he chooses to keep a few for his amusement. The forests produce acorns without culture, the hills and valleys grass, and the fields innumerable seeds of every description. Of birds, perhaps, that species which is looked upon almost with contempt is the most numerous: I mean the sparrow. Their number is, indeed, so prodigious that the King of France, with the product of all the fields in his kingdom, would be too poor to nourish them for one year: from the immense magazines of nature they derive their subsistence, and yet they form but a small part of her...
