The new Western Buddhist can learn about the Mahayana practices by engaging in the 7 day retreat with a group and know exactly what the meaning being the words are and how to properly practice them. If you use it for home study, you can omit the Ignorant Mountain Offering Food Service (done in temples only by monks and nuns) in favor of the short service. It's very good to keep the ancetral lineage walking circle practice, memorizing the ancestral names of our lineage and paying respects in the service helps cultivate support and respect of the Sangha and Triple Jewel.
