If the apostle Peter had an attachment for Jewish rites, and knew not whether baptism was to be continued or not; had not his ' beloved brother Paul, ' after being eighteen years ' called to be an apostle' by Christ himself, and who " neither received" his knowledge of the gospel system " of man, neither was taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ," and who " was caught up to the third heaven,"--had not he yet come to a decision, --not yet seen that this shadow is to be discontinued, now the substance is come? No, --he had not yet seen this! This first convert in Europe, Lydia at Philippi (where the kingdom of God first entered our quarter of the globe), must be baptized as soon as she received the preaching of Paul; and those of her house in the same circumstances. If Paul was right in his conduct in this case, the baptism of this first European convert is a Divinely authorized pattern for the imitation of Christian Europe to the end of time. (7.) The baptism of the Philippian Jailer immediately follows Lydia's. Paul and Silas are his instructors. The Jailer addressed himself to them under Divine impressions, " Sirs, what must I do to no difference between these Gentiles and us in the greatest of all gifts, can we make a difference in ritual institutions?" Impossible: and hence their baptism followed. I appeal to the Society of Friends themselves.
