EXPLANATORY. W is expressed b3r a small initial hook when it occurs before L, Bay, M or N (see L 3). The student will observe that the W expressed by this small hook is pronounced before the stem to which it it attached. In this respect it differs from the R and L hooks. The sounds of R and L are uttered always after the stems to which their hooks are attached. The H tick is sometimes prefixed to the W hook, as in Wharpage, Whale, (L 4). WHITING EXERCISE.
