Like many books on religion, there can be a vast gap between the glowing praise of the reviewers on the cover and the content. Our book group had high hopes for Klinghoffer's book. We gave up after two meetings. We concluded that David was not just misleading in his comments, but that he may be dangerously wrong.
Without going into detailed criticism, which the book does not deserve, I would recommend that readers interested in middle east monotheistic religions find another choice. Mine would be BIshop Spong, particularly his :Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes. At least Spong helps Christians interpret the meaning of midrashic writing.
Klinghoffer wanders in his writing style throughout the book. Just when he seems to be coming upon a point, he jumps to another subject. I question whether the reviewers actually read the book. If you skim the book, you might get the impression that Klinghoffers knows the topic. If he does, that knowledge does not make it to written form.
