This is not a collection of folk stories, at least not primarily. It will give you the gist of a large number of stories, but it is not attempting to tell these stories. Its goal is instead to allow the reader to see how different cultures view certain aspects of the forest. And the author forgoes much explicit analysis; his purpose is to show, not explain.
Going into this book understanding what it is, you're certain to find it enjoyable and informative. The writing is excellent, and while perhaps not an 'easy' read, an adult should be able to read it casually without any trouble; you can't turn off your brain, but its not an academic work, and you can sit back and relax with it. Every chapter is well put-together, and well organized; pacing is excellent, and you should never feel bored. There is no overriding connection between chapters, as far as I could tell, and each chapter is satisfying on its own, which means the reader won't necessarily feel much motivation to continue reading after finishing a chapter, which can be frustrating.
If folklore, and especially fairy folklore (which seems to get extra attention, or at least sticks out), interests you, I would definitely recommend "The Forest". It gives the reader plenty to think about, and will certainly make you want to go find and read many of the stories it mentions.
I loved it. But it's very much a special interest book, so if you aren't especially interested in folklore and mythology, don't bother.
