Much can be learned from reading this book. The argument between Jew and Muslim (and Muslim and Christian) is not what most people think.
As an augment to this book, I highly recommend "A Concise History of the Middle East" by Arthur Goldschmidt, available through Ailbris. Don't be put-off by the fact that Goldsmidt's book is a college textbook. It's highly readable and thoroughly interesting.
