"This is more a conversation than a book. It is a means of mutually exploring, examining and sharing the work of artists, most of them with varying degrees of special needs. It is based upon the precepts laid down by Edith Kramer and by others who came before her. The book recognizes and celebrates the artistic creations and processes of those who are beset with varying degrees and challenges. Another component central to this project is that this is a visual arts book. The illustrations have been created by amateur artist-clients, many of whom are gifted. The artworks chosen often possess stylistic idiosyncrasies, obscure content, as well as freely appropriating elements from popular culture. The aesthetic richness of the artworks is often illustrative of the uniqueness of their clinical stories. Several other professionals have been invited to enhance the narrative. By describing the situations in the book, the author poses existential or phenomenological questions related to the questions they pose. Doctor Henley will often refer to theories that influenced Kramer, discuss an image or some dynamic of a case, and then share his own analytical or art-based findings. The format then becomes a kind of dialogue. Working together, it is hoped that the dynamic illustrations, analyses, and dialogue may all enrich and enliven the findings from multiple perspectives. Kramer's methods will also undergo questioning. Her ideas and methods will be critically examined, and the author describes when she and he were at odds with one another. Henley states that her contribution is undeniable and the interventions under review will hopefully enable art therapists to appreciate her history, grasp her techniques, and implement interventions when appropriate. The artwork will lead the way, guiding the reader toward the uses of the Third Hand and hopefully enabling these artists' stories to come alive"--
