This brainy analysis by the ever-reliable Hal Foster elucidates the connection between artistic practice and theory/criticism between the period of 1960-ish and the mid-1990s, with a lot of references to art and theory of earlier eras. This was written around 1996, I think, so it has a lot of rhetoric in it about the vast right-wing faux-populist attack on culture. Interestingly, his themes and comments are not at all dated. If anything, he seems prophetic, for the "culture wars" that were so newsworthy back in that era have only become more institutionalized and foundational to an understanding to the current fraught position of art, artists, art institutions, and art commentary. Fascinating and thoughtful, The Return Of The Real attempts to breathe life and imbue meaning into the often exhausted-appearing state of contemporary ("avant-garde") art and culture.
