Not really a bad book. An odd combination of dysfunctional family with a gay son plus a mystery story. It's a departure from Michael Thomas Ford's usual genre (gay romances, with some seriously nice writing and some nice character studies), and I suppose we shouldn't discourage him for trying to branch out into mysteries. Some of the characters are more believable than others (one wonders how the gay son makes it through a single day, much less the entire novel, he's so drugged out and has a job that pays nothing). The other characters are more believable, but there are too many of them for them to be fully sketched. One of the shortcomings of the mystery novel form is that to keep the reader guessing, there have to be too many characters, with the predictable result that dimensionality in character comes second.
