Dr. Gerstner pulls no punches. He makes an outstanding case against a dispensational interpretation of the Bible. This book is a must read for anyone who loves the church and wants to know why today's church looks so much like the world. He argues that the advent of dispensationalism led to today's preaching of "cheap grace" and the emergence of the carnal Christian. With an emphasis on unoffensive "preaching lite" and the desire to be goat herders instead of shephards, the majority of today's preachers exhibit a lack of faith in the very God of the Bible they are preaching from and about. This lack of faith stems from an incorrect reading of the Word and results in flocks that, if they are redeemed, are ill equipped to perform the great commission. Gerstner recognized this and wrote this brilliant history and dissection of dispensationalism. It was first published in 1991. Thanks to him (and others) the tide seems to be turning. We are in his debt.

A thorough critical study
I found this book very helpful. I was converted in a Dispensational church but soon discerned flaws in the teaching; that was many years ago. However this study has taught me far more about this movement than I had previously learned. I have seen critical reviews of this book and the author, but now that I have read it for myself, the criticisms seem quite unjustified. The author is blunt but not uncharitable. He is quite thorough. My only observation is that he does not appear to be aware of some of the variations that I have found; perhaps that is because he is in America and I am in Britain. Perhaps the second edition rectifies this - I don't know because I have only been able to get a copy of the first edition.
