Permanand Mohan is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the St. Augustine campus of University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago where he has been teaching full-time for more than 15 years. He has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Saskatchewan, and a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of the West Indies. He was previously a Visiting Professor at the Laboratory for Advanced Research in Intelligent Educational Systems (ARIES) at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar to the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh in the USA. Mohan has taught object-oriented programming to hundreds of students over the past ten years. He has also taught courses on computer programming to thousands of students learning to program for the first time. This experience has given him keen insight into the challenges that beginners have when learning new programming concepts. He sought ways to overcome these challenges and developed several strategies that make it easier for a beginner to learn computer programming and object-oriented programming. These strategies focus on simplifying concepts and presenting concrete examples as much as possible. They have been successfully used in his classes over the past few years. These strategies have played in a key role in the organization of the book and in the pedagogical approach taken. See less
