Roger Floyd received his PhD in virology from Baylor College of Medicine in 1971, and spent the next forty years working in hospitals and medical schools across the United States. During that time, he worked with many different viruses that cause disease in people, including cancer viruses, viruses in the environment, and AIDS virus.
