If you are looking for a definitive history of AA, this is the book. It is written as a dissertation, and if you want a bit more informal language, then "AA: The Story" is the same thing.

A must read, should anyone desire a complete "outsiders" point of view of how the 12 Step programs came to be - what the foundational influences were in religion and society and how the founders Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith did indeed overcome a seemingly hopless condition of mind and body!!!
