Leave it to 21st-century technology to offer relief to someone going through an emotionally tumultuous time in her life. Rosamaria Mancini found that relief in podcasts, and her memoir, ââ?¬Å"SOS Podcasts,ââ?¬Â? chronicles just how this type of technology offered a lifejacket when she found herself drifting afloat in unknown waters.
When you are living in another country where you donââ?¬â?¢t know anyone, canââ?¬â?¢t speak the language and spend a lot of time alone because your better half is away a lot, what do you do to ease that loneliness and fill in the gap of not knowing anyone? For Rosamaria Mancini, it was listening to podcasts. In doing so, she found a community of people to connect with. She wasnââ?¬â?¢t miserable anymore and enjoyed listening to them every day. These podcasts were a lifesaver for her, so itââ?¬â?¢s no surprise that she titled her memoir about these experiences; ââ?¬Å"SOS Podcasts.ââ?¬Â?
Reading about her experiences using podcasts to relieve the sadness of being far away from family was relatable to this reviewer. When I moved to Oregon from California, I knew no one and had no connections. It was hard. But after I started up a blog, mainly as a way for my family to know how we were and what was going on with us, that sadness and loneliness went away. Thanks to the internet and modern technology, people in just such a situation are able to find some way to alleviate the negatives of their situation.
And podcasts seemed to help her out with her pregnancy troubles, too. During her first pregnancy, her mother-in-law tried to control everything she did and ate. Then she struggled when she was unable to breastfeed her baby, with everyone around her, including her mother-in-law, pushing the ââ?¬Å"breast is bestââ?¬Â? ideology. Not every woman is able to breastfeed her baby. This is something she learned to understand and accept during her second pregnancy. She writes of her second pregnancy:
There was also no operatic melodrama this time around because for most of my pregnancy my mother-in-law was more than 1,600 km away in Italy. She only arrived the day before I gave birth. I was also better prepared to handle unsolicited advice thanks to an episode of Pregnancy Confidential. The hosts explained that family members, friends, and strangers who give advice want to help but they may leave you questioning your decisions, and sometimes theyre just plain annoying. There are many things you can do, including ignoring the comments, but thats not always possible with family and friends. Instead, you can acknowledge them, explain the choices youve made, or gracefully change the subject. I wished I listened to the episode when I was pregnant with my daughter because I wouldve handled it differently. I was much more informed and grounded now thanks to podcasts. (Page 38)
Then she later adds:
Thanks to podcasts, I already knew a lot about self-care and how important it was to look after myself so that I could try to be a better individual and parent, and for those three hours each week it was fantastic to do something else. (Page 39)
How enjoyable it was to read about her celebration of Christmas in Germany! I didnt know these things about how the winter holidays are celebrated there, so I appreciated the author sharing about them.
Reading about all this podcasting made me wonder if Rosamaria took everything said in the podcasts as gospel. However, after I read further, I learned that she managed to find a way to pick and choose what advice to follow on the podcasts. If she didnt agree with something, then she didnt implement it in her own life. She learned to decide which podcasts to follow, which ones had the experts sounding off on topics important to her, and which ones fit her needs. It was interesting to learn about how she uses them in her personal life and how they help her get through the day.
One reason I enjoyed this book is because it shared how one person was able to use a form of todays technology to help fill a gap in her life. It was also interesting to read how Ms. Mancini found something that brought joy and guidance into her life with technology. She loves podcasts, and she has some favorites, which she shares with us in one chapter.
ââ?¬Å"SOS Podcastsââ?¬Â? by Rosamaria Mancini is an informative and enlightening memoir. It captures how the author relied on podcasts to help her survive some major life transitions, and how it helped her to find the courage and wisdom to embrace the future and chart a path through the unknown.
