The Work of Wolves says on the cover that it is like Lonesome Dove, one of my favorite books, and in many ways it was. Though set in more modern times, this is a story of love and loss, entangled with a deeper story- the story of what one finds honorable. Kent Meyers uses beautiful poetic prose to draw the reader into Carsons world, where the land and family mean everything, or so he thinks. Though Carson dosen't crave money, he agrees to train some horses for a wealthy neighboring rancher. When he is asked to teach the mans wife to ride, he reluctantly agrees. As he gentles the horses he also falls in love with the wife. Honor and duty keep him from realizing his love for her, but when the jealous rancher shows his true colors, there is little Carson can do but wait and hope for the best. Carsons longing and regret are palatable upon the pages. Interwoven and counterpoint to Carsons story are the stories of three other men, a Native American young man,his Uncle and a German exchange student facinated with the Sioux culture. Each of these men are learning the same lesson that Carson is learning- that money and power can buy everything -except honor. This is the kind of book that you want to read slowly to savor each image, each word. It is the kind of book that will haunt you. Carson and his familys' struggle to make a life on hard land, hard men driven to extreme measure to be honorable, and the evil that some men do with out consequence keep you turning the pages. When I got to the end I turned it over and began it once again.
